THE HYPE BEHIND FYUP

The Four Year Undergraduate Program that was due to be implemented from this session in the Delhi University have come under great criticism and scrutiny from various social as well as student groups in the recent days. The events have led to the creation of such circumstances that have led to the offer of resignation from the Chancellor of DU. The hype created over this issue have affected the future decisions of thousands of students who wish to take admission in the Delhi University after completing their schooling.

What is FYUP?

The four year undergraduate program is ought to be a visionary concept by the Chancellor of Delhi University that is bound to change the way Indian student learns after their schooling. The current system of the undergraduate program offers bachelor degree after three years of studies. The new system is set to convert the traditional 3 year program into a more holistic one that is spread over four years with the first year entirely dedicated to mandatory foundation courses in interdisciplinary subjects to make an individual equipped with the vast pool of knowledge in a variety of subjects instead of single subject specialization currently. This kind of program is seen internationally among reputed universities and also in the form of B. Tech program in science stream in the country.

FYUP in the Positive Sense

The four year undergraduate program offers a student specialization in interdisciplinary subjects at the same time and equips him more professionally to cope with the ever dynamic and changing business and economic environment. It makes his dual specialist in one go and helps in more holistic development of the individual through foundation courses that are being offered in the first year itself. The person who opts for a four year program has the benefit of being automatically eligible to international standards of different universities across the globe like the Ivy that requires compulsory four year undergraduate study of its postgraduate program. It further open the gates of Indian lands to reputed universities that not only will increase the standard and reputation of India in other countries but also will make the normal student eligible to study in an international environment without the worry to spend extra bucks or leaving the country. This way, the country will progress at a much faster pace than expected as people will then be more learned and equipped with interdisciplinary subjects that will help the nation’s progress.
The FYUP also has some long term impacts when someone tries to look deeper in the folds of the strategy. The Indian job market is not able to cope up with the fresh talent and finds itself helpless to provide jobs to fresh graduates every three years from the last one. Lack of proper job opportunities increases the sense of incapability and demotivates the individuals. The graduate individual then seeks faster ways to earn quick money. This makes him choose wrong paths and efforts on his development, instead of helping the nation, pulls the country further back in the form of crime or injustice. It is seen that the unemployed educated youth finds hard to earn then resort to unethical ways. By delaying education by one additional year, the economy will get a breath of air and will come up with additional jobs to cater to individuals more effectively. This will improve satisfaction levels of the working population in the long run. The FYUP will also promote more professionalism in the youth and make them more equipped to face the challenges of booming economy. By imparting them an option of dual specialization at the same time, the authorities are trying to implement a welcoming change in the society and education system.

It is seen, in India, the choice, of course, is not on the interests and passions of the individual, rather peer pressure, blind following and other pressures make him choose a particular stream or course at various levels of education. The FYUP grants greater flexibility in the form of foundation courses, minor subject specialization and applied courses to pursue the interest of youth without facing the difficulty of opposition from the society in the form of demotivation related to the scope of a particular stream

To work as per my passion and not profession:

The greatest fear of anyone around us, is of being not able to grab a respectable position in this society. As it was said in a famous movie that if we do not score good marks, we will not be able to grab a good grad college, and if there is not a good grad college with good marks, there would be no placement, no placement means no job, no job means no salary and no salary means no marriage. This means our society at large, is moving just to prove themselves on just a single front, i.e. to prove that they are worth marrying?? Or for that case, to grab a job which pays them handsomely. Is it the only thing left in our lives, to get money and family and get settled? What about our own aspirations? Each one of us, during our development stage, begin to develop some hobbies, some passions which we feel connected to. Some are too mainstream and some might even not be known to anyone accept us. If we stick to one of our passion, we develop a skill related to it. It may be singing,...

How corporate professionalism helped me in learning the art of self-appreciation?

It’s been a long while that I wrote something for myself. Though being a full-time content writer, busy in playing with words all day long, who people think of as a word-wizard- never short of something to write, I have, of late, fell short of words to define what I feel about my passion. I started off as a content writer & still, I am that- it’s not that my passion has faded, it is still strong and growing every day, still I sometimes feel I am not doing much for myself. Writing every day for brands and companies- fuelling their aspirations to grow more and more through advertisements, e-mailers, marketing collaterals, etc., I have somehow felt guilty of not helping myself much with my growth journey. But is it my fault… or is it just situational? I am not the type who shifts the blame to professional or personal condition, so I take it upon myself for my mistake. I have not been much serious about my journey, passion and efforts. But through my realization, I came up wit...
